Warwick University required new laboratories and lecture theatres for its Medical School.
It was essential to take into consideration the large ceiling void that would be required for the numerous and complex services needed in a medical lab. The value engineered solution was for ‘Slimflor’ construction using universal columns with fireengineered soffit plates and precast concrete floor units which produced a flat slab soffit for easy service distribution.
The state of the art lecture theatre which is electronically linked to other medical schools was designed in such a way that it took advantage of the natural slope of the site. It was also necessary to provide anti-vibration foundations to ensure that the cryo -electron microscopes’ accuracy was not compromised. The steelwork package was pre-tendered to minimise procurement times as there was a very tight programme to get everything ready for the start of term. The University had contracted to take more students and it is a credit to the Project team that the teaching facilities were available in time.
