Royal Eye Infirmary

Royal Eye Infirmary

Client: Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust
Structural Engineer: Jenkins & Potter

A new microscope was required for one of the operating theatres at the traditionally built listed Royal Eye Infirmary in Plymouth. The new, highly advanced machine was heavier and more sensitive, by an order of magnitude, than the one it replaced. As it was suspended from the existing lightweight roof, deflection and structural vibration were critical. Under sterile conditions, and without interrupting usual working hours, the existing structure was investigated.

Alterations were designed to suit the new fixings and to strengthen the roof. Works were carried out over the weekend to minimise theatre down time. As a result of the work a series of access restrictions were instigated to ensure that access to the roof by personnel was prohibited whilst the operating theatre was in use.
