The brief was to upgrade a 1970s shopping centre in a prime area of Bristol and provide a modern shopping mall. The size of the existing supermarket was doubled and roof level parking increased from 84 to 158 spaces. J&P worked closely with the client in developing various schemes until the optimum scheme was found that satisfied both cost and tenant’s requirements.
The scheme involved strengthening large areas of flat roof to permit the parking of cars; extending the main shop frontage; construction of a new atrium with a concave suspended planar glazed roof housing a travelator for access to level 1, feature stairs and new lifts to serve the upper car park levels; demolition of the existing car park lift core and construction of trolley ramps in its place; demolition of the existing car park ramps and construction of new ramps suspended over the service yard. It was the client’s requirement that the supermarket and most of the shops were to continue trading during the major part of the works.
