The modernisation plan for London Underground’s Central Line required ‘grey’ assets (structures for which no construction drawings are available) to be inspected and assessed to determine the work required to extend the station design life for another 40 years.

During a five-month period twenty-seven structures, including bridges, station buildings, retaining walls and platforms at Chigwell, Roding Valley and West Ruislip Stations were inspected and assessed. This encompasses a variety of materials being assessed, including: steel, wrought and cast iron, concrete, masonry and timber. The majority of the assets are over 100 years old. All were inspected and surveyed, with much of the work being carried out during night-time possessions. Comprehensive reports were provided for each asset including: Design Method Statements for the assessments, detailed inspections, assessment calculations and recommendations for strengthening and repair.
